Top Things to Do in Bangkok (Part 2)
For locals and tourists alike, there is never a shortage of things to do in Bangkok. If you are in town for a few days before your destination wedding or honeymoon, here are 5 more great activities to do in the City of Angels.
1. Get a bargain at Chatuchak, one of the largest open-aired markets in the world. Here, thousands of stalls sell everything, from antiques and home décor to used books, vintage and new clothing, pets, plants and more. You can easily spend an entire day here and for a break, seek out one of the three nearby parks for a dose of greenery.
2. Experience a Thai body massage, where a specially trained therapist will kneed, push, pull and twist you into a variety of yoga-like positions, using deep static and rhythmic pressures to release blocked energy meridians and promote greater vigour. If a gentler regimen is more your thing, go for a relaxing aromatherapy massage instead.
3. See Bangkok by bicycle. If you have at least a half-day to spare, consider covering less seen parts of the city by bike. There are several companies that offer special guided tours, showing you quiet back lanes in the old part of the city, hidden communities and vibrant vegetable and flower markets.
4. Head to Chinatown for a rich, multi-sensory experience. Start at the Chinese gate at Odeon Circle and continue down Yaowarat Road. See weathered shophouses and stalls below illuminated signs promoting restaurants, pawnshops and gold shops. Venture down side streets to find the long Sampheng Lane for wholesale bargains on fabrics, shoes, stationary, sporting equipment, housewares, knick knacks and much more.
5. Book a luxurious dinner aboard a converted rice barge, and savour Thailand’s renowned cuisine as you cruise down the Chao Phraya River, enjoying the city’s river views at night. Take in the stunning and illuminated Temple of Dawn, Grand Palace and Royal Barges Boat House, as well as marvel at glittering temples, colonial-style structures and other beautiful landmarks.
